Welcome to McAleavy.org (or LightPainting.org if you came in that way), my photographic home on the web and sporadically updated blog. I have a keen interest in low-light work and lightpainting in particular, but I also dabble in large format photography, infrared and Polaroid transfer work.

Polaroid 679 transfer on watercolour paper

I’ve recently completed my first book, Flashlight. It’s the culmination of six years of my lightpainting and long-exposure photography, some of which you will find in the galleries here. I’m immensely proud of both the results and of the huge amount of effort and talent contributed to the project by the models involved. It’s available here: Flashlight.

Chrissie arrived in Glasgow for a weekend of shoots with this gloriously mad black and red tutu in tow. Over the weekend she also shot with McInnes, Monkeytwizzle and Simon Pole, and everyone got to shoot the tutu. This is my take on it, but if you poke around the interwebs you may find some of the others.

Apposites Attract

I went on a trip up to Perth last weekend to work with the fabulously talented Chrissie Red. She hardly got cramp at all, despite me posing her in in some particularly awkward locations, and she was somewhat disappointed that I only fell over once and she missed it, so had one less opportunity to laugh at my antics.

Catching up with some backlog stuff. These images are from a recent shoot with Lottie, and helped me to finally get to the bottom of my infrared colour problem: why some images have a blue cast, and some a purple one. It seems it’s all down to the raw conversion. Nikon = blue, Adobe = purple. So now you know…

I’m going to be working in Nottingham for the next couple of weeks if I can get there through the snow tomorrow. So I’ll be spending my evenings in a hotel room with no internet access, which should at least give me plenty of time to catch up on some image editing…

I’ve just been somewhat surprised to see Domain Mirror at position 586 on a list of the top 1000 most downloaded WordPress plugins. This has reminded me that I have a new version that allows different post categories to be shown on each site. If anyone is interested in testing it give me a shout.

I’ve also been looking at updating the ancient version that’s posted in the Wordpress Plugin Directory, but because of the way the repository packages things I would need to rename it so that it will automatically install into the correct directory. There would also be issues with the config.inc.php file being overwritten during updates unless I can figure out how to detect it’s presence from within the plugin.

Both of these issues are likely to cause breakage with the first auto-update, so if you’re using the plugin let me know and I’ll make sure you have an updated version before I update the repository. That way I can avoid breaking mirrors all over the place.
